From: Edinburgh, Scotland | posted: 2/11/2007 at 7:31:03 PM ET The London show was ages ago but I recall it was much grittier than the film and I'm certain it didn't feature those added songs. The part of Joey in that production was taken by Ewan McGregor's uncle, Denis Lawson, who was pretty amazing in the role.
As far as the film is concerned ... IMHO there is at least one stand-out performance, the extremely under-rated Rita Hayworth. Her vocals may have been dubbed but her portrayal of Vera was spot on. Maybe another talented red-head could do well in the same role?

From: Edinburgh, Scotland | posted: 2/17/2007 at 7:25:26 AM ET Spookily enough, Pal Joey showed up last night on British TV on Sky Cinema. I noticed it was to be shown only hours after I had gone out and bought the DVD. I could so see Bernadette as Vera. Apart from the acting gravitas she could bring to the role those delicious 1950s fashions would suit her so well.

Also, Vera needs to be basically a hardened, sexually voracious woman. Don't soften that. Next, you'll be wanting a happy ending like the sanitized movie version. All wrong! Bernadette can easily play the real Vera. She'd be great.

From: Edinburgh, Scotland | posted: 2/17/2007 at 10:11:51 AM ET Thirties clothes for women aren't quite as delicious as fifties clothes - superficial I know but a fifties take on the show would get my vote. And if people don't want a "venal" Vera from Bernadette, how about a thoroughly wanton, sexually voracious but venial Vera. Bernadette could certainly pull that one off!

Actually, reassigning "Zip" is an interesting question. I tend to be against that on principle (purism again). The thought of Bernadette singing that song is so tempting though. If she did do Pal Joey on stage then she could always add "Zip" to her concert act as one of those "this was in the show...but I didn't sing it in the show" numbers.

From: northern VA | posted: 2/17/2007 at 5:30:05 PM ET Holy moly! This year?
(I know, of course, that schedules are subject to change.)
But...wow! They want to open it this year.
The real question is...what does she think of the book? We're assuming that she will do the show, and not that she accidentally on purpose left the script on the plane (but the blogging flight attendant would have noticed that).
Trying not to get my hopes up (yet).

From: northern VA | posted: 3/4/2007 at 9:05:51 AM ET Hmmmm. I'm not going to get my hopes up because of the recent concert additions. But it would be fantastic if we could see her on Broadway this fall.
(Trying not to get my hopes up, because this would be the first time I would be able to see her on Broadway, and I don't want to be disappointed if it doesn't happen.)
Thanks for the update-hope we hear more sooner than later.
