November 20, 2005 -- The horrific helicopter crash that killed actress Bernadette Peters' husband two months ago in the Mediterranean was most likely the fault of the pilot, who had little experience maneuvering over mountainous terrain.
That's the conclusion of an investigation completed last week by aviation officials in Montenegro, where Michael Wittenberg died Sept. 27, along with the pilot and two other passengers. Wittenberg, a 43-year-old investment adviser for Salomon Smith Barney, was in the Balkan nation surveying report properties.
The aircraft fell spinning to the ground after its rotor blade struck a high-voltage power line.
The Federal Flying Control, which oversees aviation in Montenegro and Serbia, said in its report: "The expert commission has finished the investigation into the helicopter crash that killed four people in the gorge Susica on the Montenegrin mountain Durmitor.
"The results will be forwarded to Montenegrin judicial authorities, who will decide on the appropriate measures."
The official also said that the most probable cause of the accident was "the pilot's insufficient knowledge of the terrain he was flying over, and thus lack of necessary precaution."
Wittenberg and Peters, 57, were married in 1996 at the farm of close friend Mary Tyler Moore.
The beloved Broadway star liked to recount how the pair first met outside her Manhattan apartment building — and she was immediately smitten by the handsome financier.
A representative for Peters said the actress had no comment on the investigation.
