Bernadette is the bravest person I know of. It was hard to watch, but she mentioned that this concert was one of her first steps. She started with LET ME ENTERTAIN YOU, and then spoke about Michael before NO ONE IS ALONE. Her show was mostly intact, but she replaced BEING ALIVE with YOU COULD DRIVE A PERSON CRAZY. I missed hearing that song, but I know it would have been the hardest. Every song she sang meant something new, and you could feel everything she felt. She is a true legend, and I thank her for doing what she did tonight. She sounded amazing the whole night, while she rushed a lot of moments (which were probably the hardest). She still gave the show everything she has, and tonight is a night I can never forget.

Oh... and ROSE'S TURN was fabulous!

I just got back from the concert as well and it was a priceless performance. She normally seems to get really emotion with some songs and tonight I think she purposely held back a lot of tears. When she first came out and said something along the lines of "And most of you know, three weeks ago I had a tragedy in my life...my husband was killed," she really started to cry, but regained her composure quite quickly and maintained it well throughout. She sang a lot of the songs and looked as though she was looking up at Michael.

Bernadette looks very thin, but her face seemed okay...no big bags under her eyes.

I'm sure others can add more about the concert.

Actually I believe You Could Drive a Person Crazy was in the concert already. She just skipped Being Alive which is normally her closer and used Rose's Turn as her closer. Her sole encore was Count Your Blessings.

I had not planned to go to this concert but when it became obvious she was going through with it, myself and a couple of my friends (including one who is days away from having a baby) felt we had to be there to support her. But unfortunately that meant I was in the back of the theater.

It was a good concert but not her usual extrodinary concerts. Because this was a gala for the Tilles Center the evening was started by a gentlemen who talked about the center's past and mentioned all the things that were in its future. We were also treated to a small film about the performers who had been there. During his speech he mentioned Bernadette several times and not only mentioned what a talented performer she was but what a beautiful person she was too. So anyway, the concert started as usual and she came out and sang Let Me Entertain You. Every single song was given a HUGE applause. After her opening she said (this is a fairly close quote) "As many of you know I experienced a tragedy in my life with the loss of my husband 3 weeks ago. I felt it was important to keep this concert date for 2 reason. One because of all the tickets that were sold and the plans that had been made but also so I could move on and continue forward for my husband". Somewhere near the very beginning of that speech, her voice cracked badly and most of it was said with a great deal of emotions and a cracking voice. You could tell she was definitely trying not to cry. The audience gave her a great deal of applause and wouldn't stop and she actually covered her mouth and kind of motioned to the audience to stop applauding because basically it was making things worse. She needed to get on with the concert and if we kept applauding, she was going to cry.

So the concert was the usual but yes, she did rush a few things. I felt like sometime she almost looked like her eyes were glazed over. I think it was an effort to get through the more emotional moments. Sometimes her voice sounded a bit tight. One of my friends noticed she had very little eye make-up on and that her eyes looked fairly puffy and red but she was up there doing her thing just maybe without quite as much Bernadette energy. And the emotions she was using just weren't, obviously, her usual ones so all of the songs just seemed very different. One song that really stood out was Unexpected Song. She blew that one out of the hall and as I was watching her through my binoculars, she had her eyes closed most of the time and I assure you she seemed in no way even aware 2.000 people were in front of her. It was definitely NOT the audience she was singing to at that particular moment. It was all for Michael. Just an astouding version of the song. At the end of the concert when she thanked us all for coming, she did also thank us for taking this "first step with her". I thought the audience was very quiet. Even though they applauded long and loud after songs there seemed to be very little response during songs. I'm not sure if the audience was a little dead or if it was just out of respect for her circumstances. I admit, I had a little trouble laughing at her usual funny moments. It also might have been because I was in the back too. So that's all I can remember now. It was wonderful to see her back on stage and I think that was really were she wanted and needed to be tonight. She is indeed a brave and strong person and I admire her even more tonight than I did before which is truly saying a lot.

Does anyone happen to have the song list from tonight? A lot of her usual songs are so emotional to begin with.

hey everyone, i'm back too. i thought it was really sad and strange. i think she was on automatic pilot for most of the night in order to get through it (although i was sitting far back, couldn't see facial expressions, so maybe i am wrong). here is the set list...

let me entertain you

(then she said something along the lines of "you are all probably aware of the tragedy that happened to me. three weeks ago my husband died." her voice caught and she started faltering then got herself together. "i am here for two reasons. first because so many people paid money to come see me and i committed to do this. and second because i made a committment to my husband" then her voice started breaking again).

no one is alone
nothing like a dame
fever
gentleman is a dope
i'm flying
unexpected song
time heals everything
mr. snow
some enchanted evening
not a day goes by
you could drive a person crazy
with so little to be sure of
children will listen
rose's turn
count your blessings (encore)

after rose's turn she came out and everyone gave her a standing ovation and she got teary again and said something like "thank you for being such a lovely audience and helping me to take this first step. thank you."

i got the feeling she was really just trying to plow through the performance (which is absolutely understandable). also with the banter, it was kind of strange like when she introduced cubby she said "he is a great drummer, a great tap dancer, and a great husband--not mine."

she was wearing her norfolk dress and did the usual scripted introductions to songs--based on what people have posted about other concerts. i couldn't take any pictures because they said they would confiscate cameras.

so yeah, overall, it was a weird, rushed, elephant in the room vibe going on. i will be interested to hear what bethlehem is like. i can't imagine that she is fully investing herself in the lyrics/songs like she usually does because i think she would completely lose it onstage.

but yes, very very brave and very beautiful. and all of the above is just my read on the performance, so take it with a grain of salt

I'm a little tired to write it up now but it was the exact Norfolk concert list except Being Alive was omitted.

Edit: Sorry, Grace Anne put it up while I typed up my lazy response.

I was there tonight, she was just amazing...I can't believe how strong a woman she is. I had tears running down my face for most of the show, every song she sang just seemed to have such a double meaning, like they all somehow pertained to her recent loss. She is a beautiful person, inside and out, I thank her for tonight and I hope she gives her heart the time it needs to heal.

I was sitting in the third row (bought a single ticket, so I got lucky), and she was in fact crying then, but throughout the rest of the show her eyes just were glazed over.

Yeah, I guess I meant she didn't break down and bawl or anything but she was definitely crying while she was talking.

I also forgot to mention that her sister was in attendance. I couldn't really see a lot of people from where I was sitting but I happened to see Donna in the lobby just before the show.

I envy you with the closer seat. Though I was glad I had my binoculars because I was able to see her face close up.

There were good and bad things about sitting that close...let's just say that seeing Bernadette's every facial expression had me crying the entire show.

Loved the show.. Bernadette was excellent... it was sad in the beginning, and throught the show becuase each song she sang just seemed to kind of fit... especially "No one is alone" and "time heals everything"..I got a little teary on that one, and looking at her, looking upwards, just made you think that she was prbably looking up at Mike... very emotional performance, but one of the best Ive ever seen.

Thank you, I really appreciate the posts about the show. I've just gotten home from a night out and watched a bit of the London show DVD - I still can hardly believe that she is soldiering on with these shows, but she is such a remarkable woman.

Well, everyone pretty much touched on the evening.
My thoughts, simply put, I have never heard her sound more amazing. She was on pitch the entire time. She was also emotionally detatched. She did not kibitz at all. It went from one song to the next with very little segway.
She did mention Michael right in the beginning, and when it became clear that it would be difficult for her to get through the evening if she thought about him, it's like she shut down and focused soley on the notes.
I teared a little during "Time Heals Everything" and I was crying during "Not A Day Goes By," but that was it.
I was very pleased with her overall singing. I had never seen/heard her sing "Fever", and it was flawless and amazing.

Thanks, all. I'm relieved that Bernadette is able to perform, and seems to want to perform.

Audiences may be conflicted about the mixed messages the concert is giving, but they are seeing something very special, that goes way beyond the usual "entertainment".
