and look who was interviewed!

an excerpt from the press release:

"Character Studies is a biography show about these great characters, from Martha in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Edmund in Long Day’s Journey Into Night, to Rose in Gypsy and Mark in Rent," states executive producer Tony Vellela. "We treat them like real people, and look at their stories, their relationships, where they came from and how they have had a lasting impact on all our lives. To do that, we're interviewing at least three actors who have all played the same role, and in addition, we hear from directors who have created these plays, choreographers and designers, and when possible, the creators -- playwrights, librettists and composers. And we've been fortunate enough to talk with many of the actors who originated these roles."

The series begins with Amanda from The Glass Menagerie, in April, followed by Rose from Gypsy in May, and Ruth from A Raisin in the Sun in June.

"We have been in pre-production for more than a year," Vellela notes, adding that the first episode, Amanda from The Glass Menagerie, includes original interview segments with Julie Harris, Olympia Dukakis and Ruby Dee, as well as James Naughton, Martha Plimpton and Sam Waterston.

Nearly fifty interviews for the series have already been logged, including Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters, Ethan Hawke, Joan Allen, Audra McDonald, Elaine Stritch, Edward Albee, Joey Fatone, Arthur Laurents, Arthur Miller, Robert Sean Leonard, Barbara Cook, Shirley Jones, Mark Brokaw, Estelle Parsons, Anthony LaPaglia, Judith Ivey, Betty Buckley, Wendy Wasserstein, Chita Rivera, Jerry Mitchell, Ruby Dee, Uta Hagen and Stephen Sondheim."
...
"New York’s WNET has just announced that Character Studies will debut the series on Wednesday, April 6 at 10:30pm with a repeat showing the following Sunday afternoon, April 10, at 2:30pm. Each PBS affiliate schedules its own programming, so air dates will be different in each market"

Anybody know what has happened with this series? I never even saw the first one and I checked the local listings. The Gypsy episode is supposed to be this month but I haven't heard anything.

I watched the first one Amanda from The Glass Menagerie. It was really really good. I was wondering what had happened to it. Thanks for the info.

Mandy-I answered your pm--long. Bad news for Marylanders who'd like to watch this (unless you can get WHUT from DC).

(I think the plan is to broadcast one episode per month.)
