Jenn, thanks so much for all the info and for the link to the book. There's obviously a lot more to the character than I ever realized. Now that you mention it, your reaction to "Impromptu" reminds me a little of how I felt somewhat betrayed by Alan Rudolph's and Jon Bradshaw's treatment of the historical characters in the film "The Moderns."

Regarding my cringing at Bernadette movies - it's not her performance - its just the material of the made-for-tv movies
Oh,Sister Rose,I understand. I don't know if this is directed toward my comment, but when I said it was too bad,I meant that it's too bad that her TV/film work has been spotty.

Part of the fun of being a Bernadette fan is watching her handle whatever role in whatever situation. She's a pro. Not just in movies, either. Imagine what it must have been like to show up on the set of one of those 1970's variety TV shows at 9 a.m. and stand in front of a goofy set and sing your heart out. Bernadette did that like a hundred times! (ok, not literally, but you get the idea...) Watching her work is a refreshing contrast to the hundreds of other performers who seem to need a 40-page contract rider and a hissy fit to get through a quick gig.

I've read this thread with great interest, and I must say I didn't know much about the real Marie. Thanks to all for the info. [I guess I should add that Impromptu is one of my top 5 favorite Bernadette movies. But now I'll think of it a bit differently when I watch it.]

The only thing I have to add is really what Leebee just posted-that is, Bernadette is indeed a pro. Watching her is always fascinating, fun, exciting, and, as I've said before, she always seems better than the material. I like that she gives her all, no matter what.

Speaking of questionable BP movies, what are thoughts on "All in the Family." I kind of liked it at points, especially BP's moments with the younger son, but at other times I found it a little blah. Still, it is better than Pink Cadillac.

Make the most of the music that is yours...

"It Runs in the Family": read some of the past discussion here:

http://www.bernadette-peters.com/cgi-bin/pmessage.pl?action=read&fid=achat&mid=3974&highlight=%22It%20Runs%20in%20the%20Family%22+

And this is what I said on 11/6/2003:
"It's not bad- not much in the way of plot, but fairly decent character/family stuff. And, as a fan, its interesting to me to see her play a somewhat "normal" character--quite different from her frequently over-the-top characters. (I think I said after I saw it that Bernadette, as usual, rises above her material-or, if I didn't say it, I should have!)"

Having just watched again yesterday, courtesy of Showtime, I'd say again that plot is surely not it's strong suit, but characterization and the family stuff is nicely done, right down to the food/wine/washing dishes/jokes about Rebecca [Bernadette] not cooking.

I would have to agree with others that some of movies that Bernadette has done I would have skipped over if it weren't for her being in them...one being the Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker made for tv movie and another being the LeAnn Rimes movie that I must confess I just couldn't make it all the way through to the end.
