As some of you may know, Rick McKay is the filmmaker of the excellent film, Broadway the Golden Age.

He is working on his sequel, the Next Generation. I just exchanged emails with him (Sister Rose has done this in the past, but I wanted to see if any progress was made), and he told me that Bernadette's agent has repeatedly declined an interview for his film.

He told me he has lots of footage of Sondheim, Jerry Herman, and others talking about Bernadette, but can't use it in his film without an actual interview from Bernadette herself.

I think we should all sign a letter to send to Judy Katz, begging Bernadette to do this.
I can't understand why she wouldn't want to, especially if Sondheim is involved.

What does everyone think?

And if you havn't checked out BROADWAY: THE GOLDEN AGE, it is now on DVD and is a phenominal film, with interviews from 100 performers/creators of the Golden Age.

Chip, I'm completely in sympathy and agreement with your (and Sister Rose's) desire to see Bernadette in the film, but keep in mind that if she's already repeatedly declined then she must have her reasons.

Karen: " ...if she's already repeatedly declined then she must have her reasons."

I understand what you're saying but maybe it's not actually Bernadette saying no. I seem to recall reading an article (probably linked by someone on this site) about a guy who desperately wanted Bernadette to read a movie/play that he had written and wanted her to play, I believe, his mother. It said that her agent repeatedly turned down giving her the script, but that somehow the guy got Bernadette's personal fax number from a frend. So he faxed it to her and she called him and said she was really interested and invited him to her apartment to discuss it -- and, i think, she ended up doing it, whatever it was. What makes me remember this is that the guy had said she had an old fax on a paper roll and she said she sat on the floor reading through the fax.

So. maybe a coordinated plea could make a difference. Ya never know until you try!

PA Fan--you remembered it almost exactly! How do you do that? "Let It Snow" is the movie.

I wonder who is giving Bernadette advice and counsel now that Tom Hammond is gone.

PA Fan, you have a really good point that had not occurred to me before. Maybe we should at least try. Okay, I'm game.

It reminds me of a story I heard about Henry Fonda's agent turning down the offer of doing the first production of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" without even showing him the play because he judged it to be "inappropriate." When Fonda later found out what had happened, the agent was fired.

Hi All - Thank you all for your interest in this. I believe it is so important to document Bernadette's contribution to theater. Sometimes people on this site tend to focus on her eating habits and hair care products, and while fun, I do not believe these to be substantive to her importance to the American theatre. When I brought this up before, I was shocked at the negative response I received. Thank you for at least considering this again. We do not know if Bernadette even knew that there was a request - Rick McKay indicated that there was no response which does not mean the same as a "no". Thanks.

I agree! Bernadette should be in that film more than any other actress. to not have her interviewed would be a huge shame!

I'd be up for it. Atleast then we'll know Bernadette knows about the project, and that Sondheim and Herman said things about her that McKay would like to include in the film.

Judy Katz can be incredibly nasty to deal with in terms of getting interviews. You have no idea... It is truly ridiculous.

I say go for it if you want, but don't expect much!

Graceanne, how do you know this? Just wondering. Anyways, if I could put my two-cents in, if BP wanted to contribute she would. From what I've read, she's a pretty private person but there's no harm in trying! Good luck guys

I'm glad everyone is behind me (and Sister Rose, it really was her original idea, I was just doing a follow up).

Now how is the best way of going about this?

Graceanne-Do you know from personal experience that Judy Katz is that difficult?

Yeah, see, that's the thing. If McKay can't get to her through her publicists, then how are we supposed to? The only solution I can think of is for one of us to hand deliver the letter at the stage door after one of her upcoming concerts; not make a big speech--just give it to her to read later. As long as we're polite and not pushy about it, I don't see how it could hurt. She still may decide against it, but at least she'll know her fans are enthusiastic about the idea, and we'll have the satisfaction of knowing we tried. That's all I can come up with. Any other suggestions?

That's a good idea, Karen. The only other thing I can think of would be posting a question to her on her official website, though I think we decided she probably doesn't read the questions herself, that she tells someone the response and then it gets posted... so who knows if it would actually get through to her.
So I guess someone handing her a "polite and not pushy" letter at the stage door is the best thing I can think of. I'll be at the Boston concert, but i'm assuming someone on here will be at an earlier concert?

I don't have any brilliant ideas, but it would be lovely if McKay gets an interview. The first documetary was fabulous (I haven't watched it with the commentary yet),and I have no doubt that the second will be the same.
