Thanks for your thoughts and memories on this matter.

It's possible that the pie-throwing is only a part of the newer, rewritten version of the play that has been done by lots of different folks recently. Apparently the libretto has been re-written by the wife of the original author (now deceased), and several songs have been added, while others have been dropped from the original version that BP starred in. A current production of this play even had plans to go to Broadway this year, but those have been "postponed."

I also saw it during the pre-Broadway tour, at the Muny Opera in St Louis. I don't remember there being any pies in faces either. I remember enjoying it a lot and being surprised it didn't do better in New York. Other than that my impressions were pretty similar to Jean's.

I saw Mack and Mabel in previews in Washington. To be honest, I don't remember the pie. All I can vaguely remember is that the singing/songs were great, the stage movement/choreography was messy (can't think of another way to describe it), and Robert Preston looked way too old for Bernadette.
