I have to stick up for Rodgers and Hammerstein. May I remind
everyone that Sondheim looked toward Oscar Hammerstein as a
second father? Hammerstein is responsible for most of what
Stephen Sondheim knows about writing a musical.

Ahh grasshoppa.. the student surpasses the masta...

actually, I think that Oscar Hammerstein wrote great lyrics...

but I doubt that Sondheim looked toward Richard Rogers very much for musical
inspiration..

My problem with R&H is the whole overdone fluffy bubblegum thing...
I tend to enjoy songs that have a human side to them and can connect with
me... R&H wrote a ton of musicals that were both unrealistic and actually
totally unbelieveable... and maybe I'm not strecthing my imagination enough,
but the songs nor the shows ever connected to me...

Feel free to throw me the "exceptions to the rules".. because it's the
exceptions that prove the point...
I highly enjoy the Sondheim Etc CD Bernadette did a few years ago...
especially the Sondheim songs.. the lyrics were in sycronation to emotional
part of the music, which added an amazing exclamation point to the overall
emotion to the songs... and this happened in nearly every song... Sondheim
ALWAYS nails it.
R&H almost never does this, therefor you don't really "feel" anything except
the fluffy bubblegum side of it all...

I believe that Hammerstein's lyrics CAN and DO stand on their own seperatly.
But MOST of the stuff Richard Rogers was putting under it was as
inconsistent as you could get, especially when Hammerstein was working on a
piece that had any emotional value other than "happy ha ha ha".

I will agree with most people that if there's anyone out there that can pull
R&H successfully it's Bernadette. I think Mandy Patinkin did an up to par
job, but Bernadette can tip the scales. (Compare the versions of songs done
by Mandy & Bernadette on their respected CD's like There Won't Be Trumpets,
and Not A Day Goes By, and I'm sure you'll agree Mandy doesn't hold a candle
to Bernadette)...

Anyhoo, my point is that there are many many different and BETTER composers
out there she could have done a recording of... I guess what it really comes
down to is the question of which will sell better in the end. And it seems
the question has been answered.

talk to you soon,
Marc

I'm not even going to waste my energy to stick up for R&H. If you haven't
found the hidden beauty of their collaborations yet, hopefully, someday you
will (if not, you're missing out on an integral part of the way musical
theatre came to be where it is today.) All I can say is, as a performer, R&H
have written some of the most difficult pieces, if only because they seem so
"bubblegum-y" and easy (because underneath there is a ton of emotion). Still
looking forward to the album-

I agree with you. Classic stuff.
