Today I recieved a copy of Sunday In The Park With George and I just finished it and it's
great! But I don't understand the Second Act at all! I mean Is it the same George from the
first act or what? I mean they talk about him dying.. and then.. I just don't understand it. Can
someone explain the second act to me It's confusing! Thanks!

Musically Here,

The second act takes place 100 years in the future. George is the grandson
of Suerat(sp?), but somehow, Dot visits him when he goes to La Grande Jatte,
and inspires him.

Hope this clears it up. If you have any more questions, just ask.

Joanna

The George in the second act is the great-grandson of Act I's George Seurat.
His grandmother Marie who is in Act II is the daughter of George Seurat and
Dot. It is quite ingenious the way that Sondheim and Lapine wrote this show.
Act II is supposed to show how much young George is like his
great-grandfather before him and how much he can learn from him. At the end
of Act II, Dot returns to inspire George to "Move on."

Just a little add-on to everyone else's explanations:
I guess how Dot returned was that he was concentrating on the painting, and
then he imagined or something that he was in his great-grandfather's shoes I
guess (don't have my pamphlet to clear it up.. eep!) and he concentrated a
lot on Dot, and she came to life, thinking he was her George, but in fact he
was her great-grandson or grandson.. whichever...

I don't think Dot actually physically comes back... she is long dead, after
all. I think that the story George's grandmother has created is so real and
so vivid that being on the Island of La Grande Jatte helps George to "move
on." Dot communicates it, I don't think she's actually there. I also don't
think this made any sense.... but I'm sending it anyway, lol

I think he concentrated so much on Dot b/c Marie showed such affection for
her, and Marie had just recently died. Pretty deep thinking, eh? Lol!

Very good perspective, dear! :) I know it has something to do with his
thinking so much and concentrating on Dot in the painting... Perhaps his
imagination gets a little carried away (hehe.. j/k... i think...)

Very true. Dot's spirit (or seomthing along those lines...essence!!) is
present through out the whole 2nd Act really. In each instance you kinda
begin to sense that she is there kinodf watching over...in a form the
guardian angel.

Yeah, especially in CHILDREN AND ART, you kind of get the sense that Marie
thinx of her as a guardian angel for her, and now she's asking her to watch
over George!!!!!!!! UGH, new idea, GOSH i luv this list.

I do not think that Dot phisically came back either. Seh was in George's
painting and therefore became a part of the modern George, because hte modern
George is like a symbol for George Suerat. And, I do not think Dot confused
George for the old George, but again, it was like modern George and George
Sueratn were one with eah other. This is just how I always imagined it.

<<And, I do not think Dot confused
>George for the old George>>

Okay, this I have to debate (if you only knew how tormented I am from not
getting my debates in w/ Nicki... :( POor Amy!) Anyways... I read the
pamphlet, and I believe it says something like "Thinking he was her George"
or something like that.. anyone wanna check that up (The CD pamphlet works
WONDERS! Not just for lyrics but for plotlines!) LOL... If someone reads
something different from that in the book, then shoot me. not really, but
let me know. :)

*takes a bow* Thank you, dear! LOL :) Glad to know at least someone believes
me! (Oh, you have no idea how many instances I said to do something, and
whoever I told to do it DIDN'T do it, and it ended up that if they had done
what I had said that it would've turned out okay, etc etc...... if that
makes any sense... in other words, I'm quite often right. :) ) Anyone else
feel like debating it or agreeing?
