Hi Tim

I haven't actually been in a production but a local non professional
group did it two years ago and i can help you out with what they did.
Like many other replies they just looked offstage to simulate the death
of the giant(a bit like the way they stood and looked offstage in the
Broadway version but without the head faling onto the stage).
As for the cow, they actually had someone play this part. It worked
extremely well.It wasn't your traditional panto cow with two people. It
was an upright cow but it got lots and lots of laughs.I wish I had a
photo to show you as it is hard to describe but just take my word for it
that it was a huge success. It also means that another actor gets a part
to play.
Anyway I hope this helps in some way.
Good luck
Brett

Is it a good cd?????I'm going to have to have to wait forever for it to
come out in Australia........I know, I know, I can order it over the
net, but i'm not too crazy about giving out my credit card number
indiscriminately.

For what I've heard of Bernadette, she appears to be a mezzo-soprano,
with a pretty decent range, a great belty voice with a better low
register than high (don't flame me If you disagree, I'm not quite sure
about this )
Bec-does anyone know exactly what voice type Bernadette is???

I saw an amateur production of Into the Woods recently. The cow was
basically plaster and on wheels, so when it 'dies' you just push it
over. The giant was a voice over, which I suppose is as good as an
amateur society or high school could manage. I hope this helps

Well as for a name, I'm not sure (as in alto, soprano, mezzo) but I do know
that she has an awesome belt voice and a rich chest voice. Hope that helps
somewhat.

Thinking about it now, I'm pretty sure she's a mezzo soprano. Excellent
belting, hey!!! I wish I could do that, but I'm a coluratura soprano,
and It's pretty bad for the voice!!

I would characterize her as a soprano with a good belt. Mezzos have much
heavier voices. And if you listen to her old stuff - George M, Dames at Sea -
definitely soprano. Not the range of a colloratura, but the quality of a
lyric soprano. She probably just prefers to sing in her middle range - I know
I do.

You could be right there. It's just that when she goes into the top
registers of her range, it doesn't sound particularly secure. Your
avarage lyric soprano tends to have a lighter voice than bernadette
too.....??

I never used to consider myself a soprano, but all through college (I went to
Shenandoah Conservatory of Music) I sang first soprano in every choral group
and my voice teacher tried to get me to stop belting for 4 years. I'm glad I
didn't listen to her. Can you imagine the Narrator in Joseph not belting?
I've been working steadily for fifteen years and would never have been able to
do it without my belt range. Of course, I'm glad I worked on the upper range,
too. It comes in handy now and then.

I did "Joseph" two years ago in Richmond, VA. Fun show. I won't bore
everyone with my resume, but keeping to the topic at hand, I've played Dot in
"Sunday in the Park" (even got to wear Bernadette's mechanical dress), Ruby in
"Dames at Sea", Mabel in "Mack & Mabel" and Little Red Ridinghood in "Into the
Woods." I'm still waiting for someone to produce "Song & Dance." Any takers?

I suppose it all depends on whether or not you want to sing classical
music exclusively. I know I'm having a hard time finding middle ground
in my work as a singer

Yes, there's not much use for a "belt" voice when signing classical musical,
so it's probably best not to risk damaging the chords. I've heard that a lot
of the kids in Rent have had serious vocal trouble after months of screaming
that stuff.

They sure did. If you just listen to the cast recording-someone like
Maureen, her voice sounds completely ruined. When I auditioned for the
show in April they wanted 'belters' who could sing consistantly day
after day after day. I bet the cast members have nodules and wrecked
chords in the space of a few months doing the show here. (it opens in
November-I have 2nd row seats!!!!!!)
